It happens only once a year,
We celebrate His birth,
But sometimes we lose sight,
In our gaiety and mirth,
Of just who Christmas day is for.

We show more care for Santa Clause
And Christmas trees and such,
Than for the very special One
To whom we owe so much,
And forget who Christmas day is for.

We go to church and preach and pray,
But seldom give deep thought
To the One who shed His precious blood,
That our salvation might be bought;
And just who Christmas day is for.

Oh, how can we as Christians be
So thoughtless in our reason
As to give Him only token praise
In this most holy season,
And forget who Christmas day is for.

Oh it’s alright I do suppose
To celebrate this glorious time,
With gifts and joy and good will;
But we must keep in mind,
Just who Christmas day is for.

We should daily keep Him in our hearts,
And be thankful that He came
To die for us upon the cross,
In great suffering and shame.
For that’s who Christmas day is for!
